Measuring windows before ordering blinds

How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds – Step by Step

Getting the correct measurements of your windows before ordering blinds is crucial for a neat and functional result. Below is a simple guide that helps you measure accurately, regardless of the type of window you have.

1. Preparations

  1. Tools You Need
A tape measure or folding rule, paper and pencil (or your phone’s notes app) to record the measurements, and possibly a step stool or ladder if the window is positioned high.
  2. Decide on Mounting Type
    • Inside the window recess (inside the frame) – The blind is mounted between the glass beading or directly in the window frame.
    • Outside the window recess – The blind covers the entire window and part of the wall or window trim around it.
Make sure you know which mounting type you want before you start measuring, as this affects how you take your measurements.

2. Measuring Width

A) Mounting Inside the Window Recess

  • Measure the exact internal distance between the two sides of the window recess or glass beading at three different heights (top, middle, bottom).
  • Use the smallest measured value as your width.
  • If rounding is necessary, round downward (e.g., from 572.5 mm to 572 mm) to ensure the blind is not too wide.

B) Mounting Outside the Window Recess

  • Measure the total width you want the blind to cover, including any extra margin on each side.
  • If possible, add a few centimeters on each side of the window for better light coverage.

3. Measuring Height

A) Mounting Inside the Window Recess

  • Measure from the top to the bottom of the window recess, or from the top to the bottom of the glass beading.
  • Measure in at least two places (left and right side).
  • Use the smallest measured height for a perfect fit.

B) Mounting Outside the Window Recess

  • Measure from the point where you want the top of the blind to be (often a few centimeters above the window recess) down to where you want the bottom to stop (e.g., below the windowsill or further down the wall).
  • Add a few extra centimeters if you want the blind to provide full coverage when lowered.

4. Depth and Space for the Mechanism

When installing blinds inside the window recess, also check the depth of the recess to ensure there's enough space for the slats and mounting brackets. Watch out for any vent handles, window handles, or other parts that could affect installation. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us with your measurements or send a photo of your window, and we’ll help you choose the right model.

5. Special Window Types

  • Pivot or Ventilation Windows: Some windows open inwards, outwards, or to the side. Always measure so the blind won’t interfere with window handles or vent fittings.
  • Door Windows: If your door has glass, you can either mount the blind on the door itself or allow it to cover the entire door opening.

6. Double-Check Your Measurements

Always measure twice to be sure. Measure carefully, and ideally use a sturdy steel tape measure or folding rule (fabric tapes can stretch).

7. Enter Your Measurements When Ordering

When you order blinds from our webshop, you will be asked to provide:

  • Width: Enter the exact measurement (usually in millimeters).
  • Height: Enter the exact measurement (usually in millimeters).
  • Mounting Type: Specify whether you plan to install the blind inside or outside the recess.

Any necessary deductions for brackets or slat clearance will be handled by us based on the model and mechanism you choose.

8. Questions or Concerns?

We understand that measuring on your own can feel daunting the first time. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Our customer service team is happy to guide you step by step and advise you on which type of blind and mounting option best suits your windows.

Tips for Successful Installation

  • Have the Right Tools: In addition to measuring tools, a screwdriver or drill and a level can be helpful when you install your blinds.
  • Be Precise: Just a few millimeters can make a big difference, especially for inside mount installations.
  • Plan Ahead: If you have multiple windows of varying sizes, create a simple sketch or label each window so you know which measurements go where when placing your order.
