How to Measure for Blinds
When ordering new blinds, it is essential to measure correctly. Below are instructions on how to measure for various mounting types. Remember that the “blind measurement” is always the total measurement, which includes the width of the headrail.
1. Inside Recess Mount (Inside the Window Frame)
For an inside recess mount (i.e., inside the window frame), provide the exact recess measurement for both width and height. In most cases, you should subtract about 1 cm (0.4 in) from the width so the blind does not rub against the frame and can move freely.
- Width: Measure the window recess at the top, where the headrail will be installed. Subtract about 1 cm (0.4 in) from this measurement.
- Height: Measure the total height of the window recess from top to bottom. Typically, no deduction is needed.
2. Outside Mount (Onto the Wall or Window Frame)
For an outside mount, the blind is installed on the wall above the window or on the window frame. Decide how far onto the wall or frame you would like the headrail to be placed.
- Width: Measure the total desired width of the blind. Often, this is the window width plus a few centimeters (an inch or two) on each side for better coverage and aesthetics.
- Height: Measure from the top mounting point to where you want the blind to end (e.g., the windowsill). You may wish to add a bit extra if you want complete coverage when the blind is fully lowered.
3. Between Glass Mount (Intermediate Glass Blind)
Some blinds (often referred to in Swedish as “mellanglaspersienn”) are installed between the inner and outer panes of older or double-glazed windows.
- Width: Measure the distance between the window sashes, noting the smallest width measurement at the top. Usually, no deduction is necessary if you are sure the blind will not rub against the sides.
- Height: Measure the height between the two panes of glass at the bottom of the sash. In most cases, you can order the blind with the exact sash height.
General Measuring Tips
Keep the following points in mind when measuring your windows:
- Measure multiple times and use a quality measuring tape for accuracy.
- If the window is not perfectly square, use the smallest measurement for width and the largest measurement for height.
- Check for any obstructions that could affect how the blind operates (e.g., handles, air vents, or trim).
- Be clear about whether you want the exact manufacturing width (the total blind width) or a finished size (accounting for any deductions). Different suppliers may handle this differently.
